Web browsers, word processors, icons and windows and email programs are just some of the applications used successfully by screen reader users. The console-based Oralux Linux distribution ships with three screen-reading environments: Emacspeak, Yasr and Speakup.

Approximately 20 percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. Increasingly, screen readers are being bundled with operating system distributions. There are also open source screen readers, such as the Linux Screen Reader for GNOME and NonVisual Desktop Access for Windows.

The open source GNOME desktop environment long included Gnopernicus and now includes Orca. Only a small fraction of this population, when compared to the sighted community, have Internet access.

Nevertheless functionality remains limited compared to equivalent desktop applications, the major benefit is to increase the accessibility of said websites. The primary audience for such applications is those who have difficulty reading because of learning disabilities or language barriers. The movement towards greater web accessibility is opening a far wider number of websites to adaptive technology, making the web a more inviting place for visually impaired surfers. Recent versions of Microsoft Windows come with the rather basic Narrator. Later versions of Microsoft Windows include an Accessibility Wizard and Magnifier for those with partial vision, and Microsoft Narrator, a simple screen reader.

The Way You Perform Your Workout Program

Workout or exercise is important both for your body and mind but have you ever considered how you’re actually doing your workout program? Whatever you do, if you are involved in a sport or activity that has potential for injury, specifically head injury, use the proper equipment no matter what anyone else tells you. For example, if you are involved with skateboarding and this is how you stay in shape, good for you! However, you need to wear protective gear such as a helmet, gloves, knee guards, etc. Most people think that something significant has to happen in order to get a head in jury. Unfortunately, that is a huge misconception. The truth is that falling one foot onto the pavement and hitting your head is enough to cause serious injury or death. This is the time to put your pride aside and think of safety first.

Remember to take a break

People who exercise need to take a break now and then. If you are actively involved in a workout regimen but you are getting ready to go on vacation for two weeks or have an extra heavy workload for your job over the next couple of weeks, instead of just stopping your routine completely during that time, just cut back. Even reducing your workout by 50% will give you the break you need but also make it much easier to get back to full speed than if you just stopped altogether.

Make yourself ready to run

Before any exercise, always remember to warm up. If you are a runner, before you go out for your actual run, take two to five minutes to jog in place to prepare. You will find that you have a better run

Cool yourself Down

Cooling down after exercise is just as important as warming up before you start. Once you have completed your workout, take five to 10 minutes to walk, or stretch to allow your body to cool down. This is very important for the muscles and joints and for the heart and lung.

Check your pulse regularly

It is a good rule to keep track of your pulse rate as you exercise,. You can pick up an inexpensive pulse measure at any local Wal-mart, K-Mart, or sporting good store. This will measure your heart rate to ensure you are staying within a healthy range. The rate is measured by counting the beats of your heart in a set amount of time, usually about 15 to 20 seconds, and then multiplying the number of beats to get your number of beats per minute. For example, if your pulse at 20 seconds were 40, since there are 60 seconds in a minute, you would take 40 times three for a total rate per minute of 120.

Exercise in the summertime

Exercising outdoors can be refreshing and fun but it can also cause problems, especially in the summertime if you do not follow some simple rules. Make sure you are drinking enough water, about 16 ounces every 30 minutes, before, during, and after exercise. Some sports drinks have special ingredients that help replenish fluids to prevent dehydration.

About Acapulco

Mexico’s first great resort destination, Acapulco is a stunningly beautiful city located around a bay on the Pacific Ocean, with miles of easily-accessible beaches. It’s truly in the tropics, with palm trees and other exotic plants everywhere. Views across the bay are gorgeous, the sunsets are legendary, and the city lights at night are lovely from every vantage point.


What to do? Swimming (but note that some beaches have rough surf and undertows), working on your tan, eating and drinking at the wide variety of restaurants and clubs… and staying up late (or all night) to go dancing at the discos. Scuba diving, fishing, boating, and other water sports are available, as are golf courses and tennis courts. The shopping is great fun, though don’t expect the best bargains in Mexico in this tourist-oriented city. Famous divers jump off extremely high cliffs into the sea at La Quebrada… that’s something to watch, not to do! Most of all, Acapulco is a place to relax.


I’ve been to Acapulco both as a child and as an adult. Of course, the city has changed a lot; the quaint little motel just a block from the beach where we stayed when I was a kid is long gone, replaced with newer, taller buildings.


I adored the city as a child, and I continue to like its natural beauty and its beaches. Though it is now a huge city and very tourist-oriented, I still think Acapulco is an outstanding place for a beach vacation. The glittering celebrities are more likely to go to the newer resorts — Cancun and others that were small towns or fishing ports when Acapulco was the rising star.


If you explore the central market and other places away from the obvious main tourist areas, you can get a real connection with the people. Many of the tourists nowadays are Mexican, and you can chat with them on the beach. Don’t speak Spanish? No problem! Smiles go a long way, and many Mexicans know some English.


The weather in Acapulco is very nice all winter, hot and humid in the summer. Good thing the beach is there!

Fighting Sugar Addiction - Good and Bad Carbohydrates At War

When did we all start counting carbs? After all, a basket of bread has long been the first dish to circle the dinner table. And how long have potatoes, rice and pasta been favorites in every meal?

Whether it’s home fries with your eggs, rice with your beans, or a big plate of spaghetti, we love carbs and many people find themselves addicted to sugar.

Some researchers believe our society is paying the cost for all those carbs with diabetes on the rise and folks just getting fatter and fatter. If that’s not confusing enough, some researchers are telling us that there are good carbs and bad carbs. So which is which?

Although the USDA maintains a food guide pyramid with 6-11 servings of bread, pasta, rice, and cereal at the base, diet gurus are shouting cut the carbs - particularly the bad ones, and America is apparently faithfully paying attention.

In a recent SG Poll on low-carb diets, 81% said they were following a low-carb diet. Skeptics may call it a fad, but the industry of low-carb eating is well established and getting bigger.

Are they wrong? Is it a money making scam?

They’re definitely raking in the cash, but scientifically, it all comes down to what scientists came up with 20 years ago called the glycemic index (GI). Here’s how it works:

When you eat carbs, your body converts them from starches to sugar molecules, which are either burned or stored. The faster carbs are broken down by the digestive system, the quicker your blood sugar will go up thus the higher the GI.

For example, white bread breaks down rapidly, while apples take a little longer. The theory is that when your blood sugar shoots up quickly, your metabolism is affected. The body then responds with a surge of insulin, which causes the sugar to be stored in muscle and fat.

A hormone that normally tells the body to burn it’s stored fuel, is inhibited by the high sugar. Your blood sugar then decreases dramatically, leaving you hungry again in just an hour or so.

Sounds simple? Not, really. GI only measures the carbohydrate in food. So the GI can be deceiving. For example, a carrot has a high GI, but contains little carbs. Despite the high GI, the blood sugar is hardly affected. That’s where glycomic load comes in, which is the GI multiplied by the amount of carb in a serving. A carrot has a glycomic load of 3 and a baked potato is 26.

Big difference.

It will probably take more time and more extensive studies to prove this theory and convince some of the more traditional nutritionists.

At this point, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) nor the American Heart Association recommend following the glycemic index as a weight-loss program. The ADA does agree that different foods have different glycemic responses, but they believe that first priority should be given to the amount of carbs consumed instead of the source of the carbs.

It should also be mentioned that research does not reflect what the glycemic responses are in combinations of foods, only single foods. Most people have more than one food on their plate at mealtime.

The bottom line is that highly refined foods, like sugared cereals, white bread and the like, are generally horribly bad carbs. Good carbs are raw, unprocessed foods like pears, oatmeal and the like.

Even while the nutritionists fight over the details, it is still a great idea to avoid the bad carbs and embrace the good carbs. It makes for a healthy lifestyle.

Living sugar free doesn’t have to be boring, at first it may take a little more creativity to stay satisfied but the longer you go without feeding your sugar addiction, the easier it is to stay fit. The best part is that you can start now and be on your way in no time at all.

Better Skiing - The Pole Plant, Your Eyes & The Soles Of Your Feet

If you haven’t done so already just cruise through the article about anticipation and angulation before reading this one, in case you are unfamiliar with the terms.

Whenever I mention a pole plant with the end of your ski poles in these articles about ski technique the rule is that you should try to make it vertically unless stated otherwise. This means that it can go into the snow anywhere on the downhill side in a quadrant radius of about 2 feet from your lower boot. The further away from you it goes into the snow, the more you will need to angulate.

In my reckoning the pole plant is nearly the most important thing for a skier to concentrate on when learning new technique. Everything follows from it. So let’s run through the process once again. Remember this is just theory; the practical exercises will come in later articles:

You must anticipate a turn by going down to put the pole into the snow vertically. Most of your weight will be over the middle of your lower foot. Angulation will get the skis on to their edge, and by so doing, will give you more precise control in the turn. You will then be in a position to set up for the next one if necessary. The speed at which you do all this depends on the type of turn you are making.

How you use your eyes and the soles of your feet is also a part of anticipation. You need to know what you are skiing on, and what you are about to ski on, so that you can react accordingly. You therefore need to be looking far enough ahead for the speed you are going, so that you can make the right decision.

The feel for the snow you are skiing on comes through the soles of your feet, and tends to come with mileage and experience. It is quite an interesting exercise though to close your eyes for some seconds every now and again (preferably on a wide open, slow and empty piste) just to feel through your feet.

Another exercise is to find a snowball sized lump of iced snow. Shut your eyes, and standing still run the ski over it, maybe with an edge or even the sole. You should be able to tell roughly what size it is and how hard it is through all those layers of sock, plastic, wood and metal, just by using your ski as a feeler.

To my my this puts the soles of your feet right up there with the pole plant and your eyes as the crucially important gizmos needed for anticipation. This is discussed in more detail in a later article on snowcraft.

When Great Customer Service Is Not Enough; Firing the Customer

If you are in business for yourself you have certainly had customers who are the customers from hell. You try everything you can including giving them free service, comp’ing their meal or even giving them discounts or free extras, yet the more you do the more they complain.

Some people just like to complain a lot and that is one thing, but when they take advantage of you can make a scene in front of other customers they make the experience of your location less desirable to other customers and actually they will hurt your business. There comes a point at which each company must decide if they should fire the customer and put them on a do not serve lest.

I am not suggesting that you should put up a sign that says in your business; we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. However, it might be a good policy of your business to consider such internal procedures or policies to prevent such customers for running your business instead of you.

When great service and excellence in customer service is not enough perhaps you should look into firing the customer. This is not to say you should not own up your own mistakes or fix problems when you see them that occur. It is only to say when you’ve gone out of your way so many times to please the single customer and he is still complaining then perhaps you should suggest that they try somewhere else in a very cordial and polite manner.

After they leave you can discuss with your staff exactly what the customer did wrong and why you asked him to leave and explain that this is not something you wish to do a lot however this case it had to be done. They come as a 2006.

Reduce Workers Compensation Premiums and Increase Employee Benefits

American employers have generally been required to carry Workers Compensation Insurance, or provide a suitable alternative coverage for their employees, since the early 1900s. The early benefit employers received from participating in Workers Compensation plans — a reduction in litigation — is no longer self-evident. In fact, new causes for litigation addressing job-related illness and injury have risen over the decades.

Workers Compensation typically covers three expenses: medical treatment for job-related injuries (they may not have to occur on the job, but each state’s laws govern specific criteria) or illnesses, providing for the support of disabled workers, and (in some cases) providing for rehabilitation of injured and disabled workers. Each state sets the criteria under which its compensation act is to be applied.

Although the states mandate basic Workers Compensation premium rates, other factors which affect your premiums include the industry classification of your company, the size of your payroll, job classifications for your employees, and the frequency and severity of filed claims. In the early 2000s, the cost of Workers Compensation as a percentage of payroll rose from about 1.6% to 1.8%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As Workers Compensation claims and costs continued to rise in the 1990s, many employers pressured their states to take action. Insurers responded by arguing they paid more for claims than they were receiving in premiums. Some state legislatures therefore allowed insurers to raise premiums and to reduce benefits. And attorneys who actively sought Workers Compensation claims often earned contingency fees from settlements. So, both insurers and employers received some relief, but workers came out worse.

The incentive to reduce Workers Compensation costs remains strong. Although employers benefit from implementing accident prevention programs and developing worksite safety strategies, insurers may in some cases adjust Workers Compensation premium rates up or down if employers do or do not carry health insurance.

Health insurance includes major medical, dental, and accident plans (among others). The more options employees have for treating injuries and illness, the fewer Worker Compensation claims employers experience.

In states where employers may elect not to particpate in Workers Compensation insurance, the employers may retain liability for worksite-related injuries and illnesses. States which allow employers to opt out of Workers Compensation insurance may require those employers to prove their capability for meeting liability.

Some insurance agents may suggest that an accident plan combined with disability may replace Workers Compensation. Not every agent agrees with that point of view. But let’s see how accident plans can help employers in other ways.

A basic accident plan provides some health coverage, may cover off-the-job injuries (eliminating “Monday Morning Syndrome”), and may help reduce employer Workers Compensation premium rates if it is qualifying health insurance. The more comprehensive the plan, the more benefit both employer and employee realize from it. An employer may be required to pay the premiums for accident insurance in order to qualify a reduction in Workers Compensation premium. Employers should consult their Workers Compensation providers to learn how to reduce their premiums.

However, even voluntary accident plans, where employees pay the premiums, may have an impact on Workers Compensation costs. For illustration purposes, let’s examine a hypothetical 100-employee company that wants to reduce its Workers Compensation expense without self-insuring or replacing Workers Compensation completely. The company’s employees earn an average of $2000 per month, so the Workers Compensation premium is based on 2000 units of $100 dollars each.

Various job classifications are applied as appropriate. Instead of having the employer pay for accident plans for all employees, let’s assume the employees are encouraged to join a voluntary insurance plan. The national average for participation in voluntary benefits is about 50%. And let’s assume this company allows its employees to pre-tax their premium deductions.

Depending on features, a voluntary accident plan may cost each employee between $20 and $60 per month. 50 employees accept the minimum accident plan ($20 per month), so the after-tax payroll is reduced by $1000 per month. The company may save from $12 to $100 per month on Workers Compensation premium. Annual savings may range from about $144 to $1200.

And the company may realize other savings. If they match employee F.I.C.A. contributions (6.2% for Social Security and 1.45% for Medicare), they realize a monthly savings of $153, or about $1800 per year (assuming no caps are reached). The company may save between $2000 and $3000 per year just by allowing employees to purchase a low-cost voluntary accident plan. If a Disability plan is also offered to employees, another $2000 to $3000 in savings may be realized (but pre-taxing Disability Insurance premium deductions is not recommended because employees’ benefits will be taxable).

While an employer must still cope with lost productivity and possibly having to train a replacement for a disabled employee, the prospect of litigation may be reduced. Claims may still be contested or investigated by providers, but disputes would be resolved between employees and the provider. Some providers don’t raise rates on voluntary plans. They just market new plans when they need to adjust premiums. Existing coverages are not affected.

Disability insurance, sometimes called “Paycheck Protection”, may be more flexible than Workers Compensation. For example, qualifying employees may use Short-Term Disability plans to pay for maternity leave. Disability insurance doesn’t replace the employee’s entire salary, so employees who can return to work have financial incentive to do so. Also, coordination between Disability insurance and Workers Compensation prevents employees from “double dipping”. They cannot profit from Disability insurance.

Regardless of whether you self-insure or pay the Workers Compensation insurance premium, you as an employer will be held accountable for job related illnesses, injuries, and disabilities. Relying solely upon Workers Compensation may prove to be more expensive than offering employees access to voluntary plans which offer benefits they won’t receive from Workers Compensation.
