In all manners of math, people are surprised when the improbable happens. Because an event is listed as unlikely, it also then becomes unexpected. In matters of money in particular, the unexpected is often not too welcome, unless you happen to be on the favoring end of things. It can be downright infuriating when you play poker online.
The beauty of probability, however, is that the unexpected will and does happen. If odds weren’t odds, and instead reigned as cold and hard facts, there wouldn’t be much of a game or thrill to the happening of poker. Instead it would be a system where the patient survives over the less patient, and waiting is valued over skill. Without the element of chance, and therefore the occurrence of the improbably, the adrenaline and mystique of the game would completely crumble.
In this way, we should be thankful for the improbable, even when it is not on our side. That probably sounds too speculative and wishful, and even harder to remember in the moment itself, but truly it is “just the way the game goes,” and the quicker you can embrace it, the more benevolent the forces of the worlds of probability might begin to turn and look on you in favor. Keep this in mind when you play poker online.
There’s a relatively famous saying in poker, “It’s hard to make a pair.” Truly, it more often than not when you see a flop with any two cards you are going to miss more often than you hit. Even when you do hit, a lot of the time it won’t be a big hand, and it can be difficult in some situations to tell whether your moderate hand is enough to win.
Considering all of this, it’s no surprise that flopping second pair doesn’t feel that special, even though a lot of the time it will be the best hand. Holding 7 8 and seeing a flop of 4 7 K come off doesn’t feel like a great holding, but there is some power in having flopped a pair at all. If you are in position, betting when checked to with second pair, unless you have great reason to believe you are being trapped, is smart. It is better to keep applying pressure even with your middling poker hands, until you are given signals that you are beat.
Playing out of position with second pair is a little different. It never feels too good to fire into a pot where you called a raise preflop and then flop the second pairthough your opponent, if he’s smart, is always going to fire a continuation bet. I like check calling out of position with second pair, and seeing how things develop. Remember this when you play poker online.
Poker is a game of position. Where you sit in relation to the dealer makes a huge difference in how you’ll do in that particular hand. Since the betting goes clockwise starting to the left of the dealer, the further you are away from being the first to act, the better off you are. Here are few bits of online poker lingo and what they mean.
Under the Gun-the poker player who is the first to act is in the most vulnerable position. Since he has to make a decision without seeing what anyone else will be doing, he’s essentially acting blindly, which is dangerous-hence the phrase “under the gun”.
The Button-The button is the last to act at the online poker table. He’s called the button because most times there is a permanent dealer at the table, so a dealer button rotates around the table to indicate the player in the dealer position. This is regarded as the best betting position at the table because this player sees what all of his opponents will do before he has to act.
The Cutoff-the player who acts just prior to the dealer is called the cutoff, because he can cut off the dealer with a big raise and give himself the advantageous last position.
One of the undeniable facts that all gamblers need to realize is that they are at the mercy of the casino. For the casino, it is all about the bottom line. The games that continue to hold a space on the casino floor are those that bring in the money. There is sharp competition for space in brick and mortar casinos, and the ones that win out are the ones that bring in the most money. As a online poker player, it is always important to think about how poker online affects the bottom line of the casino. The real question is: Is poker profitable for the casino?
The undeniable fact is that poker is profitable for the casino. While some people may argue that poker is not profitable because it is a game played against the other players instead of against the house, this approach does not take into account the sheer number of people that flock to the table. There has been a huge poker boom lately. Crowds flock to poker tables across the world, which means that sheer bulk of players makes up of the relatively low house edge. As you have probably noticed, casinos are increasing the space dedicated to this classic game. Would they be increasing poker’s presence if it wasn’t benefiting their bottom line?
I’m an impatient guy and that presents a problem, because I will start to get bored and play hands that I have no right to play. It took some time to figure it out, but I eventually picked up on one of my biggest weaknesses.
When I played online poker tournaments, I would start out with a solid game plan-play tight with my hole cards-fold ‘em until they’re great, then play aggressive when I’m in. It would work well, but the problem was, as the night wore on, I would start to get bored with folding hand after hand. Without even realizing it, my standards would slowly slip. I’d start playing Ace-7 suited in early position, calling pre-flop raises with 10-9 unsuited, and then things would get ugly when I play poker online. As I started to miss flop after flop with my lousy hole cards, I started feeling like I was due for some luck, and I’d start to play 5-2 unsuited and similar garbage without reservation, defending my blinds as if I was holding pocket kings. Eventually my deteriorated state of mind would result in an early evening.
Don’t let impatience ruin your online poker game. If start finding bad hole cards appealing, sit out a few hands and do something else.
Being able to verbally communicate with your fellow players during a poker session is an important, if often taken for granted, component of the game. Not only can much be discerned about an online poker player’s style and holding by what he says, it is also essential to the flow of the game, and more importantly, your awareness of what’s going on. Most of the time you’ll likely be seated at tables where everyone speaks the same language as you, but what about those times when that’s not the case?
Finding one’s self unable to know what others are saying at the online poker table can be intimidating, and possibly even dangerous. The possibility that essential information about the hand (such as other players letting each other know what cards they have, etc.) is for the most part veiled from you. For this reason it is not advisable to play in games where you can’t understand the language unless they are run in a legitimate casino where the in hand discussion would be regulated.
Most casinos do a good job of keeping privileged discussion in the language of the house, and protecting foreign speaking players from working at a disadvantage by disallowing hand discussion.
Chinese lantern appear to be the reason of last weeks UFO footage.Singer from Harborough Robin Maughan captured footage of a mysterious object in the sky above Western Avenue park in Harborough on Monday last week. The report featured in last week’s Harborough Mail, The office received a fair few calls by readers who had also seen the unidentified airborne object. However, as with previous sightings relayed to the Mail in 2007 and earlier this year, A chinese lantern is the likely and more believable reason2 people were seen by one Michael Williams on Farndon Road near his home releasing a lantern briefly before Mr Maughan shot his video at about 10pm.Barry Loakes, of Barnard Gardens, phoned the publication to say The three-foot tall lanterns get into the sky in a similar way to a large hot air balloon applying a heated cell that occupies the balloon with hot air.several lanterns set off during a birthday bash at a home in Lubenham Hill, Harborough, in February 2007 induced a UFO stir This year earlier on it also happened when a Kettering Road resident released one.Trevor Jones disagrees that these are lanterns after seeing one while walking his dog in a local common.Mr Jones, of Morris Road, related the object to a jellyfish and recalls noticing a similar object a month earlier.Maddy Ward put up an alternative possibility, when she viewed the video and reckoned it looked like a large space station in the evening sky..
In Texas Hold ‘Em online poker tournaments, the players’ chip stacks typically go up and down. Anyone who has played lots of casino online tournaments has experienced the short stack dilemma - your chip stack can only survive one more round of blinds and then it’s gone. You must make a move with even marginal cards rather than wait for the blind to finish off your stack. Unfortunately for the short-stacked seat, the other online poker players recognize that reality too, so you’re bound to get called when you shove your short stack all-in. It’s the do-or-die moment and luck is going to rule the outcome. During a recent tournament, I made it into the money when two players were eliminated on one hand (both with stacks less the blind) so that the bubble burst and the lowest cash prize was awarded. Making it to the money always feels great. Now I was short-stacked with six other players left, two with monster stacks. My cards came A-10 suited, and everyone folds in front of me. I push in my stack, and it’s up to the big blind to call, sitting behind a wall of chips. He matches my all-in bet and flips over K6 off suit. The flop misses both of us, the turn brings a six and the river washes me away with nothing. When you’re on a short stack with the blinds approaching, there is no other choice but to get your chips in with the best of it, knowing that your tournament life depends on luck.
Phil Laak, also known as ‘The Unabomber’ for his reputation for going into hiding in his hoodie, maintains a strange balance of mathematical analysis mixed with quirky behaviors that make him one of the more fun poker players to watch in a game. Though he often keeps a tight reign on his chips, not willing to put money in when he is behind, he will sometimes jump out of his tight shell and make a play at a pot, putting his rock solid image into work to steal when he knows he can. You won’t often see Phil Laak getting too far out of the box, no matter how wild he acts at the poker table.
Though he often appears to torture himself over the math, he usually knows exactly where is at in a hand at all times. Phil Laak has a clear love for the game that comes through in his excitability and his good humor.
Phil Laak is also in the enviable position of being the boyfriend of actress turned poker enthusiast Jennifer Tilly. They often get referred to as the ‘first couple of poker.’ Tilly has made a bit of a name for herself having won a WSOP bracelet which she famously referred to as ‘better than an Oscar.’
So you know you wanna play some Texas Holdem, and you have some money set aside to play, but you don’t know what kind of game to play. What limit, no limit? Blinds? So many choices, and it’s a very important consideration to make, that many people never give a second though to.
First things first. You need to figure out if you’d rather play a limit or no limit poker game. If you’re looking for a lot of action, you’re more likely to find that in the limit games. Since the bets are capped, you can expect people to put more on the line on weaker hands, since the maximum they can lose is capped by the betting structure. You’ll also notice that these games can last longer generally, as you don’t get all-in bets unless that’s all the player has left to meet the bet.
No limit poker games generally have more freedom in them. You see more complex poker moves and tactics, as the betting allows for it. You also see more people rotate through these tables faster, because you get a lot more all in busts. No Limit games are preferred by many of the pros, because of the complexity allowed, and these are the type of games you tend to see on the World Poker Tour and in the World Series of Poker.
So you’ve decided on either limit or no limit, but what about the buy in? This depends on your bank roll. And this is especially if you’re playing no limit.
A good rule of thumb is to have about 300x the big bet. So if you’re playing $0.50/1.00$ bet games, a good bank roll would be about 300 dollars. But this is an estimate figure. If you’re in a lot of hands, you’ll probably want more. If you’re in very few hands, and you’re a tight player, you’ll likely need less. But one thing to be wary of in no limit hold ‘em, the swings in wins and losses in this game is huge. So even a well stocked bank roll, may not be enough to hold up to a string of bad beats.
Now these guide lines are meant for non professionals. With this in mind, if you have a regular job, you should be find following the general rule. But if you’re playing professionally, you need to remember, your bank roll is your livelihood. You’re paying your bills with it. And as such, you should be paying a whole lot of attention to it, especially when determining what kind of game to play.
Regardless of your status, professional or not, if you pay attention to your game choice, you’ll soon find a limit, type, and style of game you’re comfortable with, and that with enough practice, you can beat.
