Going to Know Hayling Island

Posted by admin on October 25, 2009 in Adventure, Biker Bits, Travel + More

You have to love the wonderful smells and sights of Hayling Island and here are some ways in which you may enjoy them too. You could either walk or cycle.

Enjoy a variety of walks with the Hayling Island group taking in the pleasant sea views.

We are a group that are better for the more beginner end of the walkers

The longer walk enables those who enjoy a slightly faster paced perambulation to enjoy the Hayling coastline whilst socialising with allies.

Share a morning saunter with allies taking in the fresh sea air and ever changing environment, returning for refreshments.
This is mainly a flat route. There are two short hills at the Rowlands Castle end of the route. The majority of the route is on cycle path, but 3 short sections are on road:
1. from The Recreation Ground, The Fairway, Rowlands Castle to the bottom of the hill in Durrants Road
2. the section of road between Langstone Road and Langstone Bridge on to Hayling Island. The pavements on both sides of Langstone Bridge (only) are cycle paths.
3. the southern loop of Staunton Ave, Sea Front and Sinah Lane.

The Hayling Billy Coastal Course is prepared from jammed scalpings, with a top-dressing, there’s a little of tarmac and a spot of concrete and it can be a little lumpy in places. Most road bikes will cope but mountain bikes are better suited ” I pedalled the route on a mountain bike with slick road tyres and I was Satisfactory. There are places where some would choose to walk but these points are few and far between and very short ” bearing in mind I cycled the route the day following torrential downpours which pulled leaves off trees etc. a few pools about but on the whole it was pretty well drained.

If you want to know about a wonderful place to stay on Hayling Island then you should consider Cockle Warren. It’s a gorgeous little Hayling Island bed and breakfast place that you would do well to choose

A Grand Summer

Posted by admin on August 4, 2009 in Adventure, Biker Bits, Travel + More

What a grand summertime it has been. We went on an sensational mountain bike ride through the Sequoia National Park. It was an glorious trip, but started with the tiring drive. My gear was packed with my bike ready the night before. I left work early Thursday and started the drive alone. My meet up time was set for 8pm where I was to meet with my friends on the mountain since I didnt know where exactly the campsite would be. I had to make the timing just right otherwise I would not meet them. After that time, they were to expect that I got held up and would try again at the same spot at 10am the next day. This means if I was too late, I would end up sleeping in my car alone that night.

Turns out I made it through traffic and up the hill in time to unhook my bike, crack open a beer and bike ride up and down a couple of little hills before dark and before my buddies would arrive. The fresh air was brilliant and it was nice to be away the city. My Santa Cruz Heckler was in tip top shape and ready to tear up some rails and free riding, fresh out of the shop. Friends arrived beers in hand and ready to show me where the campsite was.

Our mountain bike ride started early and we were ready with big packs stuffed with plenty of food and water. The first crank up the big hill was ridiculously long. We pedaled over 10 miles uphill, that took over 2hrs. It was a good feeling to finally make it to the top. We took a break and sipped some water from our stainless steel water bottles.

The next 8hrs was spent jamming up and down hills, over fallen logs, off huge hits and hucking over big rocks. A couple of breaks were in order throughout the day where we drank a bit of booze and shared treats we had packed away. The terrain was spectacular and just right for some summertime riding. It was nice to see just a bit of snow left on the ground in certain spots.

The Thrill Of Harley-Davidson Motorcycles

Posted by admin on September 25, 2008 in Biker Bits

When it comes to motorcycles, the top known brand is Harley Davidson. Harleys are distinctive in design and attract a loyal following. Bikers who are not fans contend that the bikes are badly engineered, under-powered and under-performing. But in reality Harleys are designed for long, low-speed cruising on flat, straight roads. And Harley is a name that smacks of prestige and success and tradition and longevity and power. And sound! There’s the unique sound of a Harley that speaks volumes about the name.

The Harley-Davidson Motor Company was officially founded on August 28, 1903 by, strangely enough, two guys named Harley and Davidson (plus Davidson’s two brothers). Production started in Milwaukee, where it in fact continues today. Incidentally, a few years ago Harley celebrated their 100th anniversary, quite an accomplishment. And nowhere was the celebration bigger than in hometown Milwaukee, where thousands of motorists congregated for the celebration over Labor Day weekend.

Harley grew by leaps and bounds. They were the motorcycles of choice for police forces in the US and abroad. Harleys were used extensively in combat in World War I. By 1920, Harley-Davidson was officially the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. And they were only one of two American cycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression in 1929.

In the 70s, the Japanese had developed motorcycles that were far superior to the Harleys. As a result, Harley-Davidson very nearly declared bankruptcy. However, Harleys improved their quality and craftsmanship, exploited the “retro” appeal of the machines, and eventually turned themselves around to being once again among the leaders in motorcycle mania everywhere,

The Rider and Myself

Posted by admin on September 21, 2008 in Biker Bits

Most of the times, we travel with a companion. Obviously, this is because we want to share the thrill and the pleasure of riding with someone worth sharing it.

The rider should be pretty focused, right? So, if you are his co-rider, what will you do or contribute to make the ride more pleasurable and safe. Here are some tips that you can therefore follow.

Where must your eyes stare? We have this tendency every time we co-ride to take a good glance of the view around us. This happens all the time but circumstances might put us in a bad light and catch us off guard.

A skilled rider stays in focus to preclude unnecessary happening. To help him focus do nut disturb him by making him engage in a conversation. Another, you can also help by looking over his shoulder in the direction of a turn or curve. You can tilt your head away from the direction of the turn. Moreover, if you are turning right, tilt your body to the direction but your head must be vertical. This manner will keep you on the look out and will keep you updated of the direction.

Doing two things at the same time is not impossible but it can be too risky. Can you read a map while driving? Definitely, you can! But it may spell life or death. Too risky, right? Thus, spare a life. Why not help the rider by volunteering to focus on navigation while he focuses on riding.

Another vital thing to consider is the preparation. Check your motorcycle parts. Are they in good riding performance? In case of emergencies be sure to have an extra motorcycle part be it an OEM or an aftermarket motorcycle part, be sure that they are accessible anytime you need them. Is your motorcycle apparel complete? If you miss to check these indispensable stuffs, chances are you will regret it. Make a checklist of those things that are vital to riders and co-riders. Make sure that before you go out and enjoy a ride, your parts and in sound condition and your things are complete.

Planning plus extra effort to make the plans happen is crucial in order for riders to enjoy a good and satisfying adventure ride!
