Malaysia Hatches Joint Men’s and Women’s Squash Tourney

Malaysia may soon have a Grand Slam-level squash tournament that will both feature men’s and women’s event being staged simultaneously.

This is the plan hatched by the newly-elected Vice President of Women’s International Squash Players Association (WISPA) Antony Lee. WISPA currently stages its own tournaments while its male counterpart - the Professional Squash Association (PSA) - has its own tournaments for the calendar year.

Lee stated that he’s happy to become part of the WISPA board and noted that the top player in the women’s squash is none other than his compatriot Nicol David. He added that he’s the only Asian elected in the board right now and he’ll be stepping up to the challenge of implementing actions that would be for the best of interests of the players.

The current president of the WISPA is American world number two squash player Natalie Grainger.

Lee said that as of now, the board is coming up with ways to include this squash racquet sport in the 2016 Olympics. It has been reported that squash failed to meet the cut for the 2012 London Olympics.

He added that aside from the aforementioned plan, he’s hopeful that both PSA and WISPA will agree in staging a Grand Slam tournament on squash, which could be similar with the Grand Slam events in tennis.

The PSA board will also undergo changes in its board this coming September during the British Open. That will be the best time to mull things over in terms of the possibility of staging major squash tournaments.

Lee is happy to add that the new WISPA board is getting positive support from the players, including Nicol David.
