Following a rigorous inspection by HSE inspectors at several North East construction sites, work was halted after worker safety concerns were raised.
HSE inspectors aimed to investigate safety standards at construction sites with a focus on roofing and restoration work. Teesside and Northumberland sites were visited by inspectors who educated workers on risks involved and safety precautions to be taken.
Inspectors issued nine Prohibition Notices ordering construction to be halted after declaring the sites unsafe for work at heights. This is third unannounced visit by HSE inspectors as part of an annual investigation into worker safety at construction sites.
HSE Inspector John McGill said construction workers were exposed to hazardous situations all the time resulting in deaths and accidents. Work at heights was the most dangerous with many casualties and injuries reported.
He went on to say that some sections of the construction industry had recorded improvements in safety standards. But the standards in the restoration industry, especially those attached to smaller projects, were still poor.
